Maduro began its life as El Boton Natural, the very first dry- processed coffee to be exported from Colombia way back in 2008. El Boton is a third-generation farm near the town of Bolivar in the state of Antioquia. Ariel Montoya took over management of the farm from his parents, and when I met him we began to talk about coffees from Ethiopia and Yemen. Ariel agreed to do some experiments and his then-girlfriend, Cristina Garces, cupped the results before sending the best for my evaluation. Maragogipe is a natural mutation of the Typica variety that produces very large coffee beans. El Boton has been planted with these trees almost exclusively since the 1930s. Our coffee is grown at the highest part of the farm, a lot called “El Concilio.” And each year the coffee gets better. Is this the best lot yet?
